Job Description – Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Type: Full-time and Part-time

Place of Employment: Client homes, work sites outside of the client home as required, and other work sites as required by Goldstar Nursing and Homecare Services.

Accountable to: Goldstar Nursing and Homecare Services Director, Administrator, Manager, Supervisor or Nurse-in-Charge.

Job Summary: The role of a Registered Nurse (“RN”) will involve being a front-line worker who acts as a representative Goldstar Nursing and Homecare Services. An RN will serve as a community nurse, and, at times, a charge nurse in the community who is responsible for supervising the daily work assignments of the Registered Practical Nurses (“RPN”) and Personal Support Workers (“PSW”). They will mostly work independently of co-workers or supervisors and therefore must be able to balance good judgement and initiative alongside the Company’s policies. This will involve creating an individualized care program for the client and performing routine treatments/services while delivering care and while under the supervision of an RN Manager and RN Supervisor. An RN will also provide input for the performance appraisals of RPNs and PSWs regarding their ability to educate, console, and listen to families and clients. The RN duties are not limited to those listed as the position has a wide scope of duties at times dependent on the client and always under the auspices of the company. The RN will mostly work independently of co-workers or supervisors and therefore must balance good judgement and initiative along with the policies of the company.

Work Hours:

This position may require various shifts at various times (including nights, weekends, and sleep-over) in one or more work sites. Hours could be between 4-, 8- and 12-hour shifts.

Duties:

The following list is a guideline of possible duties that may be performed independently or as a 4-, 8- and 12-hourrse of working with a client. An RN’s duties, however, may be broader and may vary depending on the specific needs of the client.

The list goes as follows:
  1. Become aware of situations that make residents subject to abuse and prevents such abuse.
  2. Maintain open lines of communication among the nursing shifts, and departments, supervisors, and families.
  3. Remain aware of safety issues and strive to accomplish all responsibilities in a safe manner
  4. Consistently encourage good safety attitudes and practices in other staff members.
  5. Control, prepare, and administer treatments and medications with the knowledge of their purpose and adverse effects.
  6. Function as a knowledgeable and supportive committee member upon request by the Director of Nursing to maintain high levels of health care.
  7. Complete all documentation required for assessments, observations, planning evaluation, orders by physicians, and care provided to clients.
  8. Utilize professional assessment skills to identify the physical, mental, and psychosocial needs of residents, patients and developing care plans to meet these needs using a multi-disciplinary approach.
  9. Function as a supervisor capacity as assigned for the completion of a residents and patients care, employee’s guidelines and disciplines, and
  10. maintenance of a positive environment.
  11. Act as a resource and mentor to peer and subordinates in maintaining professional nursing standards.
  12. Act on the client’s behalf to assure patient rights and is aware of and prevents residents’ abuse.

  1. Able to supervise (instruct, assign work, etc.) Nursing Assistants, RPN’s, and PSW’s.

  6. Must be physically and mentally fit to handle the demands of care giving.
Required Qualifications/Documentation:
  1. Current certificate in standard first aid and CPR.
  2. Current RN license in the province of Ontario to practice.
  3. Able to supervise (instruct, assign work, etc.) Nursing Assistants, RPN’s, and PSW’s.
  4. Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation
  5. Valid personal criminal check
  6. Updated immunization record including TB Test (last 6 months)
  7. Ability to work independently.
  8. Excellent communication and listening skills.
  9. Compassionate, patient, and caring nature.
  10. Able to work in a stressful environment.
  11. Proficient verbal and written English communication skills (Additional language skills considered an asset)
Pay: to be discussed
General Notes:
  • The RN will be required to maintain a safe working environment for themselves and their clients.
  • There may be emergency situations where the RN will have to react quickly with sound judgement.
